“I lived in Cameroon until I was 16. The charity, the community life, the joy of the People are what I think of when I think of Cameroon. Whatever the neighbor has, he will share with you. Christmas, Ramadan, these are things we celebrate as a community. In my adoptive country, these are things that go unnoticed. Back home the birth of a child is celebrated by everyone in the neighborhood; here it’s “to each their own” and you need to book an appointment to see one another. It prevents bonds from being formed.”

“I’m very proud of belonging to the Cameroonian nation. Of course there are down sides like corruption, but everyone has their problems. If I were asked to switch nationalities, I wouldn’t do it. My parents are extremely proud of being Cameroonian and despite the fact that I’ve left, this pride has been passed on to me. Like people call us, we are “miniature Africa”. “

“I wanted to be a lawyer because I talk a lot. When I got to Canada I had to revise my career options and focus on 2 choices – either become a nurse or a social worker. Most of us have dreams that we would like to accomplish but because our parents haven’t grown up in the same kind of environment, they already have dreams for us. I think it’s important for us not to forget our dreams; it’s a part of who we are.

When you leave your country, focus on the reason for which you left. Was it to study? Then focus on your studies. Build yourself a better future, try to bring something to society; in doing so, give it your best.”

Did you prank anyone for April fools this year? “I don’t want anyone to prank me so I didn’t prank anyone.”
